In Brownsville, Texas, Cindy Vela was born on 4 January 1979 to her parents Fred and Lupita Vela. She grew up with her brother, Freddy Vela, in Olmito in Cameron County, Texas.
She piqued her interest in music around the end of her fifth grade in school. So she sought out a school band and wanted to learn instruments such as the flute and the clarinet. Her love for music grew even further when her father gifted her family-owned saxophone. She obsessed with it and played in the school band, participating in many competitions, where she won a few of them. Despite giving much thought to turning her love for music into a professional career, she toured around the country with the school band.
She graduated from Los Fresnos High School and attended the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College. She also joined the college band at the University of Texas. Her taste in music was the country and jazz type. While she asked the band in-charge professor to join the college’s jazz band, he suggested she join the college’s music program first. Eventually, she graduated with a BA degree in music education.
