Frank Turner Reconciles With Transgender Parents

The Folk-Punk star, Frank Turner has shared his reconciliation with his father who has transformed from male to female. They had next-to-no contact for almost 10 years over infidelity and abandonment issues which the singer has expressed in his music.

However, the situation was different when he met his father as Miranda in 2018 because he immediately felt that this was a different person who was a lot more considerate. The singer told, “Miranda is a really nice person. My dad wasn’t.”

Frank had shared that his late uncle who was sort of a surrogate father for him had arranged a deathbed reconciliation in 2018. He shared, “In his sickness there were some moments of conciliation but the story is long and complicated and something that I'm not yet prepared to discuss publicly.”

When they met Frank noticed how his father’s personality had changed with his gender and said, “She’s really fun, really chatty and she cares. She's interested in who I am and what I do, which my dad never was at all. It's always going to be a work in progress, but we’re doing all right.”

Frank is considered one of the UK’s most prolific writers and he has also written a song about reconnecting with his father and named it Miranda. The lyrics goes, “My father is called Miranda these days. She's a proud transgender woman and my resentment has started to fade.”

The singer had also written a song titled Rosemary Jane which was about his mother where he praised his mother for holding the family together in spite of a husband who is dead to himself and dead to everyone else.

As a child, Turner began to resent his father as he sent him to boarding school at the age of eight and then to Eton, where he remembers crying himself to sleep each night. He said that he found it extremely traumatic. He shared, “I had a long history of self-harm and mental health issues as a kid that was entirely and completely caused by that and I have scars to prove it.”

The singer didn’t speak with his father for nine years and had resentment enough for him to say that he wouldn’t go to his father’s funeral if he died.

Turner has shared that this moment is the zenith of his career as he says "I try and be a realist. If you look at the number of people who want to be a full-time musician and compare it with the number of people who get to do it over a lifetime, as opposed to a couple of years in their early twenties, the odds are against me.”

He played for a crowd of 11,000 fans at London's iconic Wembley Arena which was over twice the number of people he’s performed for before.

Although coming from a conservative parent, Turner is living his dreams and says “I see playing music live as my job. My idols are people like BB King or Loudon Wainwright who are always touring: I almost feel that to call myself a musician, I need to be playing music every day.
