Julia Sawalha, who voiced the lead role of Ginger in the 2000's original film now is being criticized for her odd-sounding voice. Julia addressed the issue through her Twitter, where she wrote she is 'plucked, stuffed, and roasted' even she was the original cast of the production.

Sawalha mentioned that she 'is not wanted' in the sequel. The production team said that she sounded 'too old,' and they are looking for the young actors for the reprised role. She said:
"Usually in these circumstances, an actress would be given the chance to do a voice test in order to determine the suitability of their pitch and tone, I however was not given this opportunity. I am passionate about my work and I don’t go down without a fight, so I did my own voice test at home and sent it to the producers … However, they stated, ‘We will be going ahead to recast the voice of Ginger."
The news of the development of the sequel swirled back in 2018, and it has the deal of Netflix's involvement in June 2020. The upcoming production is set to be directed by Sam Fell, and it will start shooting in 2021.
