Quentin Tarantino Sued By Miramax

The famous director Quentin Tarantino was sued by the Hollywood studio Miramax as he announced plans to sell seven unique non-fungible tokens or NFTs based on the hit film Pulp Fiction, including scenes from an early script that were cut from the final version.

It was announced that the NFT sale also included a digital version of the movie’s iconic ‘Royal with Cheese’ scene and a recording of Tarantino revealing the secrets of the project.

According to reports from NBC News, Miramax filed a lawsuit in a Federal Court in LA alleging the director signed away all media rights when the film was being developed and his plans to sell NFTs page scans and digital film props. Miramax attorney Bart Williams said that Tarantino’s team chose to recklessly, greedily, and intentionally disregard the agreement which Tarantino signed instead of following the clear legal and ethical approach of simply communicating with Miramax about his proposed ideas.

A lawyer responded to a cease-and-desist letter saying the director holds the reserved rights to print the publication of the script, but Miramax argued that print publication and NFTs are not the same.

According to the suit statements, “The proposed sale of a few original script pages or scenes as an NFT is a one-time transaction, which does not constitute publication, and in any event, does not fall within the intended meaning of ‘print publication’ or ‘screenplay publication.’ The right to sell NFTs of such excerpts of any version of the screenplay to Pulp Fiction is owned and controlled by Miramax.”
