The United States representative Ed Markey has defeated the bid to become the Senate of Massachusetts against Joseph Kennedy III. Markey, who has been serving as a junior senator for Massachusetts since 2013, won the Democratic primary to the incumbent to the grandson of assassinated presidential hopeful Robert Kennedy.
With the victory, Markey, age 74, will stand for another six-year term in the upcoming election on 3 November 2020. Also, Ed Markey became the first person to defeat the dynasty of Kennedy in the congressional vote in the United States. After the win over Joseph Kennedy, Ed Markey wrote a statement on his Twitter:
"Our movement is fuelled by young people who are not afraid to raise their voices or make enemies. Tonight's victory is a tribute to those young people and to their vision."
Markey, a longtime legislator, won the primary, showcasing himself as the progressive candidate in the race. He mentioned:
"We made it clear that we'd rather lose fighting as hard as we could for what we believe in than in finding the middle ground. The progressive movement knows how to fight. We will not surrender."
Ed Markey - who initially pursued his education from Immaculate Conception School and Malden Catholic High School - was able to establish himself as the earliest adopter of liberal causes noting his co-authorship of the Green New Deal and support 'Medicare for All.' He also kept himself aside from the New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sunrise Movement, a youth group that helped him a lot.
'When it comes to progressive leadership, it's not your age that counts, it's the age of your ideas. And Ed Markey is the leader that we need,' Ocasio-Cortez mentioned.
