Denver Nuggets coach Michael Malone came forth with criticism over the National Basketball Association's (NBA) policy, which prevents the families of coaches entering the campus near Orlando. But the season has already resumed there amid the coronavirus pandemic.
As the coronavirus hit the world, NBA too postponed its regular season in March 2020. And it was later resumed in July 2020 at the Walt Disney World sports complex in Florida with safety measures and without any fans. Recently, the players are allowed to see family members for the first time. Similarly, referees have a provision of bringing one guest.
But the coaches are prohibited from bringing family members into the bubble. Michael Malone criticized the policy, citing it as 'criminal in nature.' Talking with the reporters, Malone said:
"The reason I bring this up is that the players have their families here, which is the right thing to do. The referees are allowed to bring one guest, which is great. The coaches, the coaches are not allowed to bring anybody."
On the other hand, the National Basketball Coaches Association (NBCA) has mentioned that they have been determining the feasibility of allowing coaches' families to enter the bubble. The NBCA stated:
"The challenges of being away from family for so long can be overwhelming. Discussions with the league office are ongoing. We will continue to work with the NBA to evaluate the viability of coaches' families coming to Orlando as more teams exit."
Michael Malone appeared to be homesick. And with the NBA policy, he came forward saying:
"I say, "shame on you, NBA". This is crazy. I miss my family. I think I speak for me... and probably all the coaches down here. Sixty days and not being granted the privilege to have my family come here is criminal in nature."
