Her condition was related to the rare neurological condition complex regional pain syndrome or CRPS.
As a result, Beata was separated from Maya after she told the doctors to provide her daughter with a high dose of ketamine for her treatment. This raised concerns among the staff, and Dr Sally Smith accused Beata of having Munchausen syndrome by proxy.
Maya was placed in state custody, and for over three months, she stayed away from her parents and her brother, Kyle. Sadly, her mother attempted suicide after more than 87 days without Maya, and Beata left an email stating she was sorry and couldn’t handle the pain of being away from her daughter and treated like a criminal. Maya was released into her father’s custody five days after her mother’s death, and Maya’s family has filed a lawsuit against Johns Hopkins since then.
More than six years after Beata’s death, the trial will start in September, and Maya’s story has been featured in Netflix documentary, Take Care of Maya.
