Julia had revealed that she has mastectomy next month in order to remove a six-center tumor from her left breast.
She posted the news on her Instagram writing,
"This isn’t something I expected to be sharing with you all. I’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer in the last few weeks & need urgent surgery. I will share what I can with you but I’m sure you understand that I need to focus on my family & treatment, so I won’t be able to respond & engage on here as much as usual. Please self-check regularly & if you have any unexplained pain, tenderness or lumps, please ask for checks & follow ups. And ask for a second opinion if you’re not happy. I’m hoping that by reading this, other women will have the confidence to keep checking & talking to their doctors, especially if they feel something is 'not quite right'.”
Julia had to break the news to her three children while having quality time together in a garden so that they wouldn’t be scared of cancer and encouraged them to ask whatever they wanted to know. She said, “they were OK.”
Her daughter, Xanthe, asked if she could still hug her despite the illness, and to that, with all honesty, she answered, “ Yes darling. I need your hugs more than ever.” She promised her children that she could pull through the disease by using a living example of her own parents being a survivor of cancer.
She told Mail, “It is quite good on the scale on cancers. But as with all tumors, until you are in there you never know.” Her doctor had described the tumor as sizeable and so did not think Bradbury would require chemotherapy. She added, “we must check ourselves and seek help. Being scared of a diagnosis could be the thing which kills you.”
Julia concluded the interview by saying, “I trust that one day I will look down on it and think that was the fight of my life, and I have the ultimate battle scar to prove it.”
